The umbrella is a stationary hunting  device, basically a blind?

I think that is what TMan is referring to. The action I have seen in a video entails the party of hunters walking in line behind the guide holding the umbrella in front of him.

Cody and I have basically done both, but stationary mainly. We have reduced range by moving in closer behind the umbrella as well.
We have mainly used it to be in a spot where game come to or by, but there is no viable shooting position, we then sit behind it and shoot through viewing holes. It was mostly used along fence lines where there are 20 holes in fence we would then find cover from one side and use umbrella as cover in other direction, usually position including further shots. We would then just move closer along fence behind umbrella if a further hole became active or shoot from position if closer hole. I once shot a Warthog by putting barrel where I wanted to shoot because I could not aim it was so close.

A mate of mine wears rock climbing shoes when hunting. Has a very thin, pliable and super grippy sole

He must be pulling your leg.... I have climbed most of my adult life, and own about 5 pairs, and they are the most uncomfortable shoes in the world. They are designed to crunch your toes up.

I'd rather go barefoot than walk in climbing shoes 😮

What you guys are forgetting, is that the most important thing when it comes to noise, is wind.

Sound travels well with the wind, and distorts terribly, against the wind. Also, wind creates a whole lot of white noise, that reduces sound definition.

That is why I dread going hunting on wind still days. The animals can hear you from miles, with excellent definition. On windy days you have better chances of stalking closer.

On the subject of foot ware, I used to use a pair of thin soled vellies, until I got a massive Acacia karoo thorn through the sole of my shoe. It pegged my foot into the shoe via the sole. I had to snap the thorn off in my foot to get the shoe off. And then limp back to the lodge to get it removed from deep inside my foot.

I have lived in England more than half of my life, but I never forgot that you always where boots in the Eastern cape bush.
Againstthegrains, what ever were you thinking?

He's not a climber and neither am I so perhaps the shoes aren't what he thinks they are. Whatever they are intended for they are very lightweight high tops with a very thin and pliable flat sole.

The famous hide behind, 2nd one - this is about 10 years old. Its colour is mainly dried blood that kinda somehow got on it while transporting after a hunt.
See the shooting viewing port ?
What actually got me going on the umbrella thing was that Cody did everything with me, even if he was asleep while doing it. So at 6 - 7 years old he would often drag a toy along on the hunt. n
Not being able to keep still had cost me a few shots, and things had been said sworn which were really not fair. I tried the umbrella and Cody was so much  happier during the long sits. We would eat, drink, play silly games with stones even have naps behind that umbrella. Shot many, many W/Hog from that on pavement pick up that someone threw out.
